ComReg orders Eircom to slash LLU costs

19 Aug 2009

Ireland’s national regulator, the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), yesterday published a decision compelling former monopoly Eircom to cut the cost of an unbundled broadband connection from EUR8.41 (USD11.87) per month to EUR0.77. The move is expected to make the domestic broadband market more competitive by substantially reducing the wholesale rate charged for local loop unbundling (LLU). Commenting on the announcement, the chief executive of BT Ireland, Chris Clark, said: ‘BT welcomes ComReg’s direction of a substantial price reduction for local loop unbundling. We firmly believe that LLU has a significant part to play in the creation of competitive high speed broadband in the Irish market.’
