MIC extends mobile registration deadline

18 Aug 2009

Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) has extended the deadline for pre-paid mobile subscribers with more than three phone numbers to register their personal details from 10 August to the end of December, reports Viet Nam News. The deadline has been moved back due to the sheer number of subscribers involved; according to the MIC, mobile users with more than four numbers total around 40 million. Many of the country’s subscribers change SIM card to take advantage of promotions offered by Vietnam’s various wireless operators. The ministry has decided that individuals will only be allowed to subscribe to three phone numbers from each mobile service provider without registering. Deputy director of the MIC’s information department, Nguyen Xuan Tru, said that nearly 600,000 individuals subscribed to up to 50 phone numbers each, though the majority are likely to be mobile phone card dealers who have registered numbers on behalf of customers who did not want to declare their personal information. He added that military-owned cellco Viettel has at least 20 million customers with more than three numbers.
