Etihad Atheeb launches WiMAX in Al-Medina

17 Aug 2009

Saudi fixed line and WiMAX operator Etihad Atheeb has announced that it has expanded its ‘GO’ WiMAX service to cover the western city of Al-Medina, albawaba.com reports. Dr. Ahmed bin Abbas Sindi, CEO of Etihad Atheeb, said: ‘We are proud of the introduction of broadband internet to Al-Medina… This step is an important milestone in the second phase of network expansion for GO. We launch this service with full understanding of importance, uniqueness and spirituality of Al-Medina and the necessity to provide a solid network and consistent service [in the city].’ The telco launched its first commercial services in Riyadh and Jeddah in June 2009, breaking incumbent operator Saudi Telecom Company’s fixed line monopoly and becoming the fourth WiMAX operator in the country. Etihad Atheeb received a WiMAX concession covering all 13 regions of the kingdom in May 2008 and announced that it would spend between USD500 million and USD1 billion on network deployment.
