German business daily Handelsblatt reports that a number of Germany’s cable operators have expressed an interest in acquiring struggling rival Orion Cable, the parent company of cablecos Tele Columbus and PrimaCom. Interested parties include Munich-based operator Kabel Deutschland (KDG), which according to sources close to the matter is holding talks with Orion, and Cologne-based cable co Unitymedia, which is reportedly interested in Orion’s networks in the federal states of Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia. Telecoms companies including Vodafone Germany are also reportedly interested in a takeover of the struggling cableco, which is burdened with debts of EUR1.7 billion (USD2.4 billion) and has around 3.2 million customers. Mobile operator Vodafone also operates its own fixed line network for the provision of telephony and broadband internet services, but has not yet ventured into the cable market.
