News burp: Globalive gets Wind

11 Aug 2009

Canadian start-up mobile operator Globalive Wireless will offer services under the ‘Wind’ name used by its sister companies in Italy and Greece, it has been announced. Set to launch 3G services in early 2010, Globalive is part-owned by Egypt’s Orascom Telecom, itself majority owned by Weather Investments, which wholly controls two full-service alternative telecoms operators, Italy’s Wind Telecomunicazioni and Greece’s Wind Hellas. ‘Wind is an established and growing brand with a successful history of over ten years in two large European markets, and Canadians will benefit from the economies of scale of this relationship,’ commented Globalive chairman Anthony Lacavera.
