7 Aug 2009

In the second quarter of this year, Movilnet, the mobile subsidiary of Venezuelan fixed line incumbent CANTV, added around 400,000 net new subscribers to end June with more than 12.6 million users. Alberto Paiva, Vice President of Commercial Operations at Movilnet, told Inside Telecom that the company had around 900,000 subscribers using its GSM network, or 8% of the total, and that it plans to continue marketing its nationwide CDMA2000-based 2G/3G services alongside the newer GSM platform, as well as the W-CDMA/HSDPA service to be launched in Q4 (details of which were reported in CommsUpdate yesterday). Movilnet previously set an overall target of 13 million customers by the end of the year.
