Pahang, the third largest Malaysian state, is preparing to announce the construction of what will be one of the world’s largest open-access fibre-optic networks, Comms Day reports. While no official details of the infrastructure have been revealed, it is believed that initially it will have coverage of more than 570,000 potential users in the capital city of Kuantan. The network, which will operate under the ‘Jalur Lebal Nasional’ moniker, is backed by High Speed Broadband Technology (HSBT), one of the unsuccessful bidders for the Malaysian government’s High Speed Broadband (HSBB) project; Telekom Malaysia was officially awarded the HSBB contract in August 2008.
