BSNL profit tumbles as operating cost increases

31 Jul 2009

According to the Hindu Business Line, state-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has reported a slump in net profit for its 2008/09 financial year. The operator posted net profit of INR5.75 billion (USD119 million), down from INR30.1 billion a year earlier, with BSNL blaming the decline on increased employee costs as a result of the implementation of recommendations by the Pay Commission. Revenue, however, rose to INR358.1 billion, a 10.6% year-on-year increase, with revenue from broadband services rising 90% against its previous fiscal year.
