Argentina one step closer to NP

31 Jul 2009

Argentina’s telecoms ministry Secretaria de Comunicaciones (SeCom) has said that number portability (NP) could be fully implemented next year, writes BNamericas citing local paper La Nacion. Decree 764, which was introduced in 2000, first approved NP, but the option for subscribers to change service provider but keep their existing numbers was never enacted. An Argentine court ruled earlier this month that NP be regulated within 90 days, and according to the report, SeCom believes that it will be able to meet the deadline. It remains unclear whether NP will be implemented for mobile lines only within this time, or if fixed telephony lines will also benefit, and if telecoms operators will cover the costs related to the introduction of NP.
