MEOW roaring to disaster zones

29 Jul 2009

Australian fixed line and broadband incumbent Telstra has unveiled its Mobile Exchange on Wheels (MEOW), a mobile telephone exchange specifically created to provide services in disaster zones, itWire reports. MEOW is capable of providing up to 450 voice lines and more than 300 ADSL2+ connections at speeds of up to 20Mbp, and is light enough to be towed by a four-wheel drive vehicle. The unit’s development was spurred by bushfires in Victoria in February this year, and is designed to complement the operator’s other disaster zone tools, which includes its portable cellular base station, Cell on Wheels (COW).
