Econet employs Ericsson for three-year expansion

Swedish technology giant Ericsson has signed a three-year deal with Econet Wireless Zimbabwe enabling the cellco to expand its network with the initial aim of reaching five million subscribers by the end of next year, reports the Zimbabwe Chronicle. Ericsson has agreed to increase voice and data capacity for Econet, which had 1.2 million subscribers at the end of March 2009 and has announced plans to launch Zimbabwe’s first 3G mobile services for a limited number of clients next month, also with Ericsson’s assistance. Elsewhere in the news, a spokesperson for Econet said that the GSM cellco was currently selling around 30,000 new mobile lines per week, and added that by 2011 its network would cover the country in its entirety.
