TelecomsAsia reports that Jiangsu Cable, China’s largest cable TV operator, has won the right to provide broadband and other value added services, although voice services are specifically excluded. According to the report, more than 20 Chinese cable operators have ISP licences, including Shanghai-based Oriental Cable Network, Beijing Gehua CATV Network, Shaanxi Broadcast & TV Network Intermediary Co Ltd, Shenzhen Topway Video Communication and the cross-regional China Cable Network. Very few of these companies deliver commercial broadband and even those which do are mostly niche players. Jiangsu Cable was founded just a year ago through the merger of ten city-level cable players and has approximately 10.66 million subscribers.
