India’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, Bharti Airtel, is reporting its largest ever quarterly subscriber additions, increasing its customer base by 8.55 million in the three months to 30 June 2009 to break the 100 million barrier. On the back of its expanding client base the cellco also revealed that revenue for the three-month period had increased by 17.2% year-on-year to INR99.4 billion (USD2 billion), while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 17.9% y-o-y to INR41.5 billion. Net profit for the operator was INR25.1 billion, up 24.3% against the same period a year earlier. Commenting on the results Sunil Bharti Mittal, Bharti Airtel’s chairman and managing Director, said: ‘Bharti Airtel has once again delivered strong results in this quarter. I am delighted that this good performance validates our rural thrust and investments in the past three years. The focus of the recent Union Budget on rural growth and demand stimulation will support the rapid growth of the telecom sector and Bharti Airtel.’
