Vietnamese military-owned telco Viettel has selected Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) as its radio network infrastructure supplier to help roll out its 3G network. Under the contract NSN will provide the hardware, software and services required to build and manage the network, including skills training for Viettel’s team. Product deliveries begin this month and by early 2010 the vendor has said that Viettel’s subscribers will be able to access rich multimedia applications and data intensive services. ‘As the market leader, we are committed to ensuring our customers experience the best in class and most advanced services available in the market. NSN with its superior solutions, strong local support and global experience in 3G deployments was our partner of choice to ensure the successful roll out of our planned services,’ said Nguyen Manh Hung, deputy general director of Viettel. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Viettel was awarded a licence to operate 3G services by the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) in April 2009, along with Vinaphone, MobiFone and a consortium between EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom, which will build and develop a 3G network together.
