On Telecoms and Vivodi close to merging

22 Jul 2009

Greek alternative broadband and fixed line providers On Telecoms and Vivodi Telecom are getting close to a merger deal, after several months of negotiations, according to local financial daily Imerisia. The newspaper said that the proposed new company would have a total customer base of around 150,000. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, On Telecoms is the larger of the two unbundled local loop (ULL) providers, having attracted customers through the launch of IPTV, telephony and broadband internet services in January 2007, which it delivers over a combination of ULLs and its own direct fibre network. In April 2009 it was announced that On Telecoms was entering final negotiations for a proposed merger with DSL and WiMAX ISP Net One, which had merged with fellow ISP Algonet in April 2008, whilst reports of a proposed merger between Vivodi and another ULL-based rival Hellas On Line in September 2008 came to nothing.
