State-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has revealed that it aims to launch commercial WiMAX services in the Tamil Nadu circle by November 2009, the Business Standard is reporting. Citing comments from BSNL’s principal general manager, R Ganesan, the report suggests that as part of the first phase of rollout the telco has placed orders for 30 WiMAX base stations, with each station aiming to cover a radius of 15km. It is also understood that around 22 locations, predominantly rural regions, have been earmarked as locations for service. Mr Ganesan noted: ‘The equipment is expected to arrive in August and we will start offering the service from October or November.’ In the second phase of network rollout BSNL is expected to acquire between 250 and 300 more base stations.
