Qatar Telecom (Qtel) has passed the milestone of two million mobile subscribers in its domestic market this month, the company announced. Qtel added that according to population figures from the Qatar Statistics Authority it has achieved a penetration rate of 121%, with a recent ‘surge’ in sales driven by promotions for users of both its Hala (pre-paid) and Shahry (post-paid) services. Qtel had signed up 1.83 million mobile subscribers by end-March, and faced its first competition earlier this month with the launch of Vodafone Qatar.
