Net profit and revenue fall for BSNL in FY2008-09

20 Jul 2009

State-owned telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has revealed that both net profit and revenue fell in FY2008-09, the Business Standard reports. Net profit for the operator dropped to INR1.04 billion (USD21.6 million) in the twelve months to the end of March 2009, while revenue was down to INR349.4 billion from INR380.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. Revenue from basic services, including fixed line voice connections, fell from INR145 billion in FY2007-08 to INR115 billion a year later, with the telco attributing the weaker result to the decline in the number of fixed line voice subscribers; BSNL said 727,000 fixed line connections had been discontinued in the last six months alone. Additionally, the telco said the results also reflected increasing staff costs, following a revision of salaries across the company.
