German cableco Unitymedia now offers broadband access at download speeds of up to 32Mbps to more than 500,000 households in the federal states of Nordrhein-Westfalen and Hessen, writes inside-digital.de. This figure represents a 75% increase year-on-year. At present, 88% of the 8.7 million homes passed by Unitymedia’s cable network have been upgraded to enable access to the company’s triple-play offering Unity3play, a figure which is expected to rise to 90% by year-end. By the end of 2014, the Cologne-based cableco is aiming for 75% of all households passed by its network to be able to access broadband internet at theoretical download speeds of up to 50Mbps. At 31 March 2009 Unitymedia’s retail broadband customer base totalled 438,000, while the number of possible wholesale broadband subscribers reached 275,000.
