Regulator says Eircom must give BT Ireland access to NGN core

16 Jul 2009

Ireland’s national telecoms regulator, the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg), has determined that BT Ireland’s request for uncontended wholesale Ethernet access in the Republic constitutes a reasonable request and one which former monopoly Eircom now has a duty to provide. The watchdog went on to warn that failure to comply would be seen as a breach of Eircom’s access and non-discrimination obligations, ComReg said it a wordy, 79-page legal document on the matter. ComReg has ruled that Eircom now has just three months to give BT Ireland wholesale access to its next generation, uncontended Ethernet network, or face the threat of the watchdog barring it from selling such core services.
