NTC clamps down on mobile SPAM

9 Jul 2009

The Philippines’ telecoms regulator the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) is taking off the gloves in a bid curb the blight of unsolicited mobile spam in the country. New legislation is being ushered in completely banning the sending of SPAM messages while fines for any firm found guilty of breaking the law are to be increased dramatically. Until now anyone found in breach of the old law was subject to a paltry PHP200 (USD4.13) fine per violation, but under new rules the fines will be increased to USD208–USD208,000 per violation – depending on the seriousness of the offense.
