Aircel begins service in Pune

Indian cellco Aircel, a subsidiary of Malaysia’s Maxis Communications, has launched commercial services using GSM technology in Pune, in the Maharashtra circle. The launch bring the total number of circles where Aircel is operational to 18, and commenting on the development Gurdeep Singh, Aircel’s chief operating officer, said: ‘The launch augments the next phase of our pan-India rollout. With mobile penetration of approximately 82% in Pune, there are a lot of segment based needs that an operator can fulfil for better consumer satisfaction.’ The launch comes hot on the heels of May 2009’s announcement that Aircel had commenced operations in Mumbai, and according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Aircel had 18.5 million subscribers at the end of March 2009.
