Alca-Lu forecasts 8%-12% drop in global equipment market

Paris-based Alcatel-Lucent (Alca-Lu) predicts the global market for telecoms equipment will decline by between 8% and 12% (at constant currency exchange rates) in 2009. Speaking at a telecoms conference hosted by French newspaper Les Echos, the vendor’s chief executive officer Pierre Barnabe said that while investments appeared to be slowing, demand for capacity remains resilient. The CEO also scotched rumours that his company is looking to exit the mobile phone sector, saying Alca-Lu remains focused on the sector adding that its multi-billion-dollar LTE contract with Verizon in the US, signed in February, ‘has definitely anchored us strongly in that business.’
