Pirates delay SEACOM launch

25 Jun 2009

East African cable consortium SEACOM has announced that the recent rise in piracy along the east coast of Africa has led to delays in the deployment and launch of the SEACOM submarine network. The fibre-optic cable system has been re-routed around trouble spots and is now scheduled for launch on 23 July. Testing will begin over the 15,000km, 1.28Tbps system once the cable has been landed in Mumbai. SEACOM is working with Tyco Telecommunications to accelerate the outstanding work and bring forward the launch date.
