Softbank Corp has revealed it will ‘go national’ with sales of NTT’s FLETs Hikari-branded fibre-optic service, effectively throwing in the towel in the fight for fibre space in the country. The Nikkei reports that from next month Softbank will resell NTT’s service across the country, bringing the curtain down on its challenge to the incumbent. In 2004 Softbank introduced a high speed fibre-optic service under the Yahoo BB banner by leasing circuits from NTT. However, Softbank has conceded defeat because of high leasing fees and started to act as a sales agent for the Hikari services in ten prefectures in February this year. The telco plans to increase the prefectures to 34 this month and to all 47 in Japan on 1 July 2009.
