First UK shared site live for Vodafone and O2

British mobile operators Vodafone UK and O2 UK have announced that, following an agreement to share infrastructure signed in March this year, the first shared site has gone live. According to Vodafone, its equipment was added to an existing O2 base station, with the newly merged apparatus expected to increase the former’s coverage on a section of the M4 motorway. Vodafone also revealed that it expects to remove its own neighbouring cell site in the near future. The operators also claimed that benefits from the tie-up are being seen, noting that ‘the whole process from planning to implementation (was) completed in eleven weeks, compared to nine months for a typical standalone site.’
