Idea reveals nationwide GSM expansion plans

Idea Cellular has outlined its deployment plans for its GSM network. According to the cellco, working in tandem with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), it will follow up the launch of GSM services in Tamil Nadu last month by doing likewise in Chennai in July, before expanding the offering to four other telecoms circles – Calcutta, West Bengal, North East and Jammu & Kashmir – by December 2009, and to all 22 circles by March 2010. By that date the company expects the network to comprise 2,400 cell sites. Currently the operator has more than 40 million subscribers in 17 circles.

In separate but related news, Idea Cellular says that meetings involving shareholders and directors will take place on 13 July and 14 July to consider the proposed merger with Spice Communications.
