MPs to decide whether to force pre-paid registration

17 Jun 2009

Greek communication minister Evripidis Stylianidis yesterday announced that under new legislation, all pre-paid mobile phone users in the country will have to register their identities with a network operator before activating their SIM card. AP News reports that the bill, aimed at tackling a wide range of criminal activity, would require all pre-paid SIMs to be registered by 30 June 2010, pending approval by parliament. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, there were 19.6 million mobile user accounts in Greece at the end of March 2009, approximately 70% of which were pay-as-you-go. TeleGeography notes that in some other markets around the globe the introduction of a pre-paid registration scheme has led to an initial significant drop in overall mobile users.
