Chilean cableco VTR has set up a mobile subsidiary VTR Movil, with an initial capital of USD10 million, writes TelecomPaper. The new subsidiary plans to bid for a 3G licence, which the country’s telecoms regulator Subtel will award next month. The tender covers three blocks of 30MHz in the 1700MHz/2100MHz frequency bands. According to the local newspaper Estrategia, 13 operators have acquired the terms of reference for the tender including the country’s four incumbent operators Telefonica, Entel PCS, Claro and Nextel. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Chile was home to just over 16 million wireless subscribers at the end of March 2009.
