Mexican WiMAX auction within three weeks?

11 Jun 2009

Mexican telecoms regulator Cofetel could begin the auction of WiMAX spectrum within three weeks, BNamericas reports citing comments from Hector Osuna, the regulator’s president. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Cofetel first revealed plans to auction WiMAX spectrum in the 3.4GHz-3.7GHz bands after gaining approval from the Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) back in October 2007. Cofetel had previously indicated it would auction frequencies in the 71GHz-76GHz and 81GHz-86GHz bands for point-to-point communications and short-range wireless backhaul, but has now said this will not take place, and is instead discussing whether to outsource the administration of such spectrum. The independent administrator would certify operators using this spectrum with a view to ensuring that all operators have equal access to it, and would verify that it is used appropriately.
