China Mobile, PCCW, SmarTone win 1800MHz spectrum

Hong Kong’s Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) announced yesterday that three existing mobile network operators have successfully bid for a total of 9.6MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800MHz frequency band. China Mobile Hong Kong, Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT, a unit of PCCW) and SmarTone paid a total of HKD46 million (USD5.9 million) in upfront spectrum utilisation fees (SUF) for their respective 3.2MHz allocations. Apart from the upfront fees, the successful bidders are required to pay an annual SUF (for the period from 30 September 2009 to 29 September 2011, HKD232,000 for each frequency band per year; and for the period from 30 September 2011 to 29 September 2021, HKD2.32 million for each frequency band per year or 5% of the network turnover in the year concerned, whichever is the higher).
