CFE formally asks SCT to auction fibre strands

11 Jun 2009

The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Mexico’s state power company, has officially requested that telecoms regulator Secretario de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT) auction off two unused portions of its nationwide fibre-optic network. The regulator is now understood to be working with the CFE on elements for the auction process including bidding rules and the contract model. The announcement comes less than a month after it was rumoured that such a sale could be on the cards.

Despite the development, according to BNamericas there has been criticism of the proposals, with some industry figures claiming that the two fibre strands will not be sufficient to meet the market demand, and there have been calls for the CFE to consider auctioning more; the power company reportedly has 36 unused portions of fibre that could be sold in a similar manner.
