2G spectrum allocation put on hold

11 Jun 2009

India’s Economic Times is reporting that the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) has decided to put on hold the allocation of any additional second generation spectrum. The move comes as the regulator looks to finalise the methodology for the release of such spectrum, and follows the announcement in April that the DoT was considering an auction model for spectrum allocation. In addition, it has been reported that a report from a panel convened specifically to consider the spectrum allocation matter has recommended that all operators should be allowed to buy, sell and transfer spectrum for a fee. Telecoms minister Andimuthu Raja has said that the communications ministry will seek an endorsement of the proposals from the Telecoms Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) before implementing the new policy.
