Telecom Italia and Aria announce WiMAX partnership

9 Jun 2009

Telecom Italia (TI) and Aria have signed an agreement to collaborate over WiMAX distribution, enabling the companies to extend access to broadband services in areas not yet reached by ADSL-based services, Italian daily La Repubblica reports. The agreement reportedly grants Aria the right to use TI’s 3.5GHz band frequency allocation in nine central and southern regions of the country (Abruzzo, Umbria, Lazio, Molise, Puglia, Campania, Basilicata, Calabria and Sardinia) to fulfil its coverage commitments to the Ministero dello Sviluppo Economico (MdSE). In return TI will be able to supply its own customers with WiMAX services via Aria’s nationwide ‘white label’ wholesale offering. The agreement also allows Aria to use TI’s transport network to deploy its own national network. Oscar Cicchetti, TI’s director of domestic market operations, said, ‘The agreement represents an important example that collaboration between telecoms operators can contribute to a further extension of broadband and confirms our attention to the spread of technological innovation throughout the country.’
