Rwandatel, Rwanda’s second largest mobile operator by subscribers, has begun the commercial rollout of post-paid services, writes East African Business Week. The company aims to sign up 5,000 contract customers by the end of the year. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, the cellco launched its GSM/W-CDMA network in early December 2008 joining former monopoly MTN Rwanda in the country’s wireless market. At 31 March 2009 Rwandatel had a total of 280,000 mobile customers, representing a market share of 17.39%, while rival MTN claimed 1.33 million subscribers at the same date. Rwandatel is owned by Libyan government investment vehicle LAP Green Networks (80%) and the Social Security Fund of Rwanda (20%).
