Chunghwa and China Telecom plan submarine cable

4 Jun 2009

Chunghwa Telecom and China Telecom have announced plans to lay a submarine cable across the Taiwan Strait, between Kinmen and Xiamen. Construction is expected to cost less than CNY100 million (USD14.67 million) and will commence once the project secures approval from both the Chinese and Taiwanese regulators. China Telecom’s chief engineer Leng Rongquan said that completion of the cable would be beneficial on both sides of the strait, increasing data transfer efficiency and speed, and greatly reducing costs. Telecom’s chairman and CEO Lu Shyue-ching said, ‘If development of the telecoms industry across the Taiwan Strait could help reduce costs, we would lower prices [in Taiwan] to reflect the cost reductions.’
