Wi-Fi network FON has announced it has been selected by German mobile operator E-Plus to help expand the cellco’s wireless data service. E-Plus subscribers will now be able to use their Wi-Fi-enabled phones and laptops to access the FON network in Germany, comprising 25,000 hotspots. Additionally, 300 of the cellco’s shops will operate as FON hotspots and subscribers will be able to access the service free of charge until 1 September 2009. The two companies are working on expanding the FON network to more public places. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, E-Plus is the country’s third largest facilities-based wireless operator by subscribers, with a customer base of 18.04 million at 31 March 2009.
