Anatel rejects Copel’s request to operate fixed telephony

2 Jun 2009

Copel Telecom, the telephony arm of Brazilian power utlity Paranaense de Energia (Copel) has been denied its request to offer fixed telephony services, Gazeta do Povo reports. The regulator Anatel denied its bid to secure a licence for the provision of Fixed Switched Telephone Services (STFC) last Thursday. It is understood that the decision was taken because Copel already holds 45% of the share capital of Sercomtel, a company which already has licences to operate in the Parana where Copel Telecom was seeking authorisation for its STFC concession. Copel declined to comment on the decision.
