Broadcasting service provider Lithuanian Radio and TV Centre (LRTC) has introduced its WiMAX service in Kaunas, Lithuania’s second largest city. The launch brings the total number of cities covered by LRTC’s mobile broadband network in the country to five. The broadcaster was awarded a WiMAX licence by the Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT) in late 2007, and vendor Samsung was contracted for the deployment in the capital Vilnius in December 2008, supplying 530 3.5GHz base stations. In addition to the capital and Kaunas, the two companies have deployed mobile broadband networks in Panevezys, Klaipeda and Siauliai. LRTC expects more than 100,000 subscribers will use its WiMAX service by early 2010.
