29 May 2009

DiGi Telecommunications, Malaysia’s third largest cellco by subscribers, is set to upgrade its GSM network in a bid to improve call quality, expand coverage, cope with increased traffic and offer a wider range of features. Light Reading is reporting that the operator has inked a deal with Nokia Siemens Network (NSN) that will see the latter assist with the upgrades by providing its Flexi Base Station; the Finnish vendor will also be responsible for network optimisation and project management over a three-year period. The initial upgrade phase is expected to be complete by November 2009. Commenting on the deal Ole Martin Gunhildsbu, DiGi’s chief technology officer, said: ’In step with global trends, subscriber demand across Malaysia is increasing, and improving the customer experience is key to not only retaining customers, but also to attracting new ones.’ No financial details of the deal have been disclosed.
