Excelcomindo withdraws from Palapa Ring project

Mobile operator Excelcomindo has pulled out of the consortium developing the Palapa Ring telecoms project, which is intended to provide internet access at improved speeds throughout Indonesia, reports the Jakarta Globe. According to the newspaper, Gatot Dewabroto, Indonesia Minister for Communication and Information Technology, has said that the government will use funds generated from service provider fines to keep the project alive. Telkom, Indosat and Bakrie Telecom are the three remaining operators in the consortium, and have committed a combined USD150 million, leaving a shortfall of USD550 million to the USD700million needed.
