Iberbanda and Alvarion ink WiMAX network expansion deal

27 May 2009

Spanish wireless broadband provider Iberbanda, which is partly owned by Telefonica, has selected Alvarion to expand its 3.5GHz WiMAX network in Catalonia. The expansion is being undertaken following the successful bid by Iberbanda to provide WiMAX services to the Catalonian government. Under the contract Iberbanda expects to double its broadband capacity in all four of Catalonia’s provinces; Barcelona, Tarragona, Lleida and Girona. Alvarion will deploy its BreezeMAX platform, which it claims offers enhanced capacity with extended coverage. It also encompasses a range of features, allowing operators to customise the network configuration to fit their needs. Commenting on the deal Ricardo Gomez Villagran, CEO of Iberbanda, said: ‘This contract is another key milestone in our long standing partnership with Alvarion. Our team conducted several successful tests together with the Government of Catalonia for this specific implementation before awarding the expansion to Alvarion.’
