Cofetel okays spectrum tender proposals

27 May 2009

The Mexican telecoms regulator Cofetel has given the nod to proposals to offer spectrum in the 1.9MHz and 1.7MHz bands, Reuters is reporting. It is understood that Cofetel has approved the conditions of the much-delayed tenders, and submitted them to the country’s competition authority, Cofeco, for further review. Cofeco, for its part, could establish limits on the amount of spectrum any one operator can be allocated, according to comments from deputy communications minister Gabriela Hernandez.

It is expected that the auction for the 1.7MHz spectrum will bring the entry of at least one new player to the wireless sector, while existing cellcos which currently lack 3G spectrum, including Telefonica Moviles Mexico, are also expected to join the bidding process when it is formally announced.
