Cologne-based cable operator Unitymedia has announced it has begun to upgrade its network in the towns of Warstein and Ruethen and the surrounding area in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The upgrade will be completed by 29 May, enabling the company to offer Unity3play, its triple-play package of digital TV, broadband and telephony, to 9,300 households. The upgrade forms part of Unitymedia’s regional broadband initiative which will see more than 730,000 households in 99 rural municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hessen will be able to gain access to broadband services via the cableco’s network. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Unitymedia supplied Unity3play to 1.7 million customers, while broadband subscribers totalled 713,000.
