Venezuela’s president Hugo Chavez last week announced the abolition of the country’s telecoms and IT ministry he established two years ago, which will now be folded into the Ministry for Science, Technology & Intermediate Industries (MSTII), reports local newspaper El Universal. State-owned national telco CANTV and its mobile subsidiary Movilnet will now be overseen by the MSTII, whilst independent regulator Comision Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Conatel) will be absorbed by the Ministry of Public Works & Housing. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, existing telecoms authority the Ministry of Popular Power for Telecoms and IT was established by presidential decree in January 2007.
