UOL announces 1Q09 results

Universo Online (UOL), Brazil’s leading online media portal and internet company by customers, has released its financial results for the first quarter of 2009. UOL said advertising and other revenues totalled BRL88.4 million (USD41.9 million) in 1Q09, up 67% year-on-year, due to the increase in advertising revenues, and revenues from the new products launched over the two past years. First-quarter EBITDA reached BRL42.8 million, a 23% increase year-on-year; the EBITDA margin was 27%, two percentage points higher than in 1Q08. Net income came to BRL36.8 million, 50% more than a year earlier in a period in which the company increased its paying broadband subscriber base 23% y-o-y to 1.2 million.
