Unitymedia posts 16% rise in 1Q revenue

German cableco Unitymedia has posted its fiscal results for the three months ended 31 March 2009, recording a 16% year-on-year rise in revenue to EUR232.1 million (USD316.8 million). The company’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) increased 13% to EUR106.6 million, compared to the EUR94.3 million recorded in the same period a year earlier, while EBITDA margin rose to 47.8% in the first three months of 2009 from 47.3% at 31 March 2008. Unitymedia’s CAPEX for the quarter totalled EUR69.2 million.

In terms of subscribers, the cableco’s ‘New Services’ customers, comprising subscriptions to internet, telephony and digital TV offerings, increased by 175,000 in the quarter to 1.7 million, up 60% year-on-year. Retail broadband revenue generation units (RGUs) rocketed 79.4% to reach 438,000, compared with the 244,000 recorded in the same period a year earlier, while wholesale broadband reached 275,000, up 108% against 1Q 2008. Fixed line voice customers increased 93% year-on-year to 428,000. At 31 March 2009 86% of homes passed had been upgraded for Unity3play, the company’s triple-play offering.
