14 May 2009

BNamericas is reporting that Indotel, the Dominican Republic’s telecoms regulator, has made changes to the way in which it handles the country’s universal service fund, as well as how it will ensure competition in the telecoms sectors. The report cited a statement by Jose Rafael Vargas, the regulator’s head, which noted that Indotel would revamp its internal structure, including the creation of an R&D division that will look at technologies such as VoIP, and also examine convergence and modifications to regulations to support emerging technologies. Additionally, the regulator is expected to hire an international consultant with the specific aim of coordinating technical teams to modify regulations related to interconnection issues and the allocation of spectrum.
