CMMB mobile TV test reports satisfactory results

14 May 2009

Hong Kong’s telecoms regulator OFTA has published details of a trial of mobile TV technology standard China Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting (CMMB), which took place in the Special Administrative Region (SAR) in November-December 2008. The first-phase trial was conducted by Television Broadcasts Limited, with equipment support provided by Beijing WiFLARE Technology and Beijing Thomson Commerce Co, and technical support from the Academy of Broadcasting Planning. In general, the report said, the performance of the CMMB technology indicated that it is among the mobile TV standards ‘with the capability to support portable and mobile digital TV services in Hong Kong.’ The Chinese CMMB standard, developed by SARFT, will undergo further field trials in Hong Kong. SARFT is aiming to cover more than 300 mainland Chinese cities in the coming years with CMMB broadcast network coverage, and has collaborated with handset manufacturers including ZTE and Legend.
