12 May 2009

Indian cellco Unitech Wireless has awarded contracts worth an estimated USD400 million to hardware vendors Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei for the rollout of GSM-based infrastructure, Telecom Tiger reports. It is believed that Huawei has been selected to carry out the larger share of the construction, with its contract reportedly worth around USD225 million. The agreements follow reports last month that Norwegian telecoms group, which announced it would take a 60% stake in the Unitech for INR61.2 billion in October 2008, would invest up to INR112 billion (USD2.4 billion) in the mobile operator.
